Colder temps - try this! Caught a Big Bass!

I have heard that you can catch bass in the fall/ winter using jerk baits I tried it and it worked!! I tried this one in the summer off the dock here at my local lake where there is a lot of pressure - lots of other people fishing. Apparently that's not really a bad thing because it brings the bass out from inside submerged tree limbs and such.

Anyway, I was trying this same jerk bait in July and notice a bass following it. Well that's a good sign! I just needed to figure out how to trigger a strike. Long story short you have to establish a 'cadence' which means a pattern. In July I wasn't doing it right, the wrong way is a steady retrieve. So, rather use a pattern of pull/ tug and then wait 2-5 seconds, then pull/ tug again.

This lure floats to the surface quickly, unlike other jerk baits, and for me that's good because a lure like this with 3 hooks with 3 hooks each I usually get caught in branches underwater and that's a bit frustrating.

There are several patterns you can use. I use a quick jerk/ pull one time and then count to 2 or 3 seconds for the lure to float back to the surface. I can actually see it on the surface. I also rattles.

You could try 2 pulls and wait a 5 seconds or you could try 3 pulls and wait 10 seconds. It takes some patience as you won't know until you know. For me the bass like a fairly active lure so pull and wait 2 seconds seems to work.

In the video there was a good bit of wind and that's usually good for fishing. But I had to maneuver the boat a lot to keep from being blown into the bank. So my cadence / patterns was off just when I got a strike. Go figure, but I'm not complaining, Fish ON!!

This part of the lake is 12" to 30" deep with plenty of grass vegetation so it's shallow and not a place for a bottom dragging worm on spot-remover as I usually like to use.

The high was 65 and sunny today (beautiful) and the low was 30 last night. The bass seem to be following the shad for food that have moved into the shallows to stay warm. I don't see any schools of shad on the surface as I did just a month ago.

I see bass spools in the water when they eat and it's usually close to the edge or < 20' out. So the bass are moving to the edge to eat. (I think).

Great Fish!! It's a great time to fish! Fish on!! Go get em'!
