Train Operator in San Francisco Falls Asleep and Nearly Causes an Accident

A train operator on San Francisco’s N-Judah Muni Metro line was suspended after falling asleep while driving, causing the train to take a curve at nearly 50 mph (80 km/h) — far above the permitted speed limit. The incident, caught on video, shows the operator’s head dropping moments before the train violently jerks, throwing several passengers to the floor.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) confirmed that there were no mechanical failures and attributed the incident to operator fatigue. At least one passenger reportedly suffered a concussion. Transportation Director Julie Kirschbaum called the event “unacceptable” and announced new safety measures, including automatic speed control systems and expanded fatigue-awareness training for operators.
