Marco Rubio warns about the growing power of cartels and criminal groups in the hemisphere

Marco Rubio warned about the increasing threat posed by cartels and criminal organizations in Latin America, noting that many of these groups operate as true transnational terrorist organizations. Rubio emphasized that even without ideological motivation, they possess more weapons, better training, and superior intelligence than several nation-states.

The senator stated that the United States is willing to assist regional governments with equipment, training, and intelligence sharing, as long as those countries formally request it. He stressed that this is not about unilateral intervention or sending U.S. troops, but about supporting nations facing threats that surpass their capabilities.

Rubio cited critical cases such as Ecuador, where these groups have planned IEDs and attacks against state institutions, including a presidential convoy. He also highlighted that in Mexico there are regions effectively controlled by cartels more powerful than local or even national forces. In Haiti —he added— the crisis is not ideological but driven by heavily armed gangs that surpass the country’s security forces.

According to Rubio, the expansion of these organizations represents a serious challenge to the security and stability of the entire hemisphere.
