Santa Ana, CA - The Nov. 11 incident, according to a social media post from the Santa Ana Police Department, occurred when officers were “conducting proactive enforcement” along East 1st Street and attempted to contact a man sitting in his car in a strip mall parking lot.

“When the man in the vehicle saw the officers, he started his vehicle and drove toward one of them, striking the officer in the legs,” police said. “The officer was able to jump onto the hood of the suspect’s vehicle to avoid being run over.”

The suspect, later identified as Kenyata Deshon Harris, allegedly fled the parking lot at high speed, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit.

A short time later, authorities said a motorcycle officer spotted Harris driving erratically in the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway before eventually pulling over.

Body-worn camera footage shows officers with weapons drawn taking the 49-year-old into custody on the freeway.

It is unclear if the officer allegedly struck by the suspect’s vehicle suffered any injuries during the incident, nor is it clear what exactly what type of conduct police were proactively attempting to enforce.

Harris was booked at the Santa Ana Jail on multiple felony charges, including assault on a peace officer and evading police, according to Orange County Jail records.
