Brandon, FL - The superintendent of schools in Middletown, who is facing a DUI charge in Florida, was placed on administrative leave immediately after a board of education vote Thursday night.

Alberto Vázquez Matos was arrested for driving under the influence in Brandon, Florida in July. The citation from police says he refused taking a breathalyzer.

He was also charged with holding a Connecticut and Florida license. Vázquez Matos surrendered his Florida license at the arrest.

Vázquez Matos plead not guilty to the two charges he faces.

The Board of Education called an emergency meeting to discuss Vázquez Matos' employment Thursday night. After three hours of executive session, the board voted unanimously to transfer all responsibilities of the superintendent to central district staff while he is on administrative leave.

The board also appointed board member Chris Cardella to work with the board's counsel to discuss the next steps of Vázquez Matos' employment. A final decision has to be presented before the board.

Middletown has a history of superintendents involved in controversy.

In 2022, Michael Conner resigned from the role, and an investigation later found Conner likely made unwelcome romantic and sexual advances towards a senior administrator.

In 2012, Michael Frechette resigned after a settlement with the school board that included an agreement that neither party would answer questions about what happened. He was in charge of the district while the school dealt with the “scream rooms” controversy, claims that students were locked in unsupervised seclusion rooms.

Vázquez Matos is the first bilingual and biliterate Latino superintendent for the district. He stepped into the role in 2022 after Conner resigned.
