Insulin resistance is a condition where your body's cells become less responsive to insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar levels. When cells are resistant, the pancreas produces more insulin to help glucose enter cells, but over time, this increased effort can wear out pancreatic function, leading to higher blood sugar levels, prediabetes, and eventually type 2 diabetes.
