Oklahoma death row inmate found unresponsive in cell after being granted clemency on execution day

Oklahoma death row inmate Tremane Wood was hospitalized Thursday after being found unresponsive in his cell, just hours after Gov. Kevin Stitt granted him clemency, commuting his death sentence to life without parole.

Prison officials said Wood experienced a medical event due to dehydration and stress, resulting in injuries to his head and lip, but confirmed no one else was involved.

Wood had been sentenced to death for his role in the 2001 murder of Ronnie Wipf during a botched robbery, though he and his attorneys argued he did not carry out the killing himself.

He met with his family and a spiritual adviser after being discharged from the hospital, and authorities emphasized the professionalism of staff during the high-profile events, CBS News has reported.

Wood is the sixth person in Oklahoma’s modern history of capital punishment to receive clemency and the second granted by Stitt since taking office.
