FREE EUROPE (1970)
FREE EUROPE (1970) surveys how Western Europe rebuilt after World War II—economies revived through the Marshall Plan, coal and steel cooperation, and the rise of the Common Market—while everyday life shifted from ration books to refrigerators, scooters, and weekend travel. The film highlights factories and farms returning to full production, new highways and modern housing, and a growing middle class shaped by welfare states, worker protections, and cross-border trade.
Culturally, it captures a continent redefining itself: youth music and cinema, festivals and football, art and design from modernism to bold 1970s style. It also acknowledges the Cold War divide and the push for cooperation that set the stage for a more integrated Europe.
