Winter Studio Sweden: Bus crashes into bus stop – several dead and injured

Three people have died after a bus crashed into a bus stop on Valhallavägen. According to police, several others were also injured. The bus driver was arrested and charged with causing the death of another person and causing bodily harm.

The accident occurred at 3 PM on Friday afternoon in Östermalm, in central Stockholm.

"There are several seriously injured," Oscar Davila told the emergency services.

According to the Stockholm region, two were taken to the hospital by ambulance, and a third was injured by other means. Police confirmed that three people died in the crash.

A witness who was in a shop near the crash site told SVT that he heard the scraping sound coming from the bus shower that the bus hit. It ended with the bus crashing into a pole with the bus stop in front of it. The witness then saw several people lying dead under blankets at the scene of the accident, who described how other witnesses to the accident were crying inside the store.

Shortly before 5 p.m., the emergency services ended their efforts at the scene, said Chief of Staff Mathias Häglund.

"The bus should not have been in service, and the bus driver should simply have been on board," said Mathias Häglund, commander of the rescue service.

Double-decker bus involved – driver arrested

The bus involved in the accident belongs to the company Transdev. The company's communications director, Lovisa Åbom, said they are deeply affected by what happened.

“Everyone at Transdev with a crisis management role is on-site, speaking with employees and available to help. Our focus now is on supporting our employees after this terrible event.

The driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing another person's death, but the cause of what happened is still unknown.

Police are not commenting on the number of injured or the nature of their injuries. They are also not currently commenting on the gender or age of those involved.

Valhallavägen between Engelbrektsgatan and Odengatan will remain closed until further notice. Bus lines 4, 6, 67, and 72 will be temporarily rerouted in the city center following the accident, SL announced early Friday evening.

The Stockholm Region stated shortly after 4 p.m. that the hospital intervention was nearing completion.
