Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a Somali-born Dutch-American author, activist, and former politician renowned for her outspoken criticism of Islam, female genital mutilation, and honor violence, drawing from her own experiences as a survivor of FGM, forced marriage, and fleeing an arranged marriage to seek asylum in the Netherlands in 1992. She gained prominence through her collaboration with filmmaker Theo van Gogh on the 2004 short film Submission, which critiqued the treatment of women in Islam and led to van Gogh's assassination by an Islamist extremist who also threatened Hirsi Ali's life, forcing her into hiding and eventual relocation to the United States in 2006. A former member of the Dutch Parliament (2003–2006) with the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, she has authored bestselling books including Infidel (2007), Nomad (2010), and Heretic (2015), advocating for reform within Islam and women's rights; in 2023, she announced her conversion from atheism to Christianity, and she currently leads the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Foundation while serving as a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
