Mola Mola have been described as a giant head with fins that floats slowly through the ocean. They are the world's largest bony fish, reaching weights of more than 2220kg (5,000lbs). They can lay 3,000,000 eggs at a time.
Once thought to eat solely jellyfish, it is now understood that jellyfish make up approximately 15% of their diet. They feed on fish, eggs, and other slow-moving animals. Their large eyes and mouth that cannot close give them an unintelligent look as they drift slowly, incapable of significant speed in the water.
Reclusive and known to inhabit deep, cold water, they are a rare sight for scuba divers. These lucky photographers met several face-to-face in the Galapagos Islands and they enjoyed a prolonged and close encounter.
