Masahiro Sakurai has quite the distinguished resume at this point. Most gamers know him as the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, which has sold tens of millions of copies over the years. Not as many know he’s also the creator of Nintendo’s Kirby series. Kirby Air Riders will be the first Kirby game he’s worked on in over two decades.

While the Kirby series is known for being approachable, beginner-friendly platformers, Kirby Air Riders, the sequel to 2003’s Kirby Air Ride on GameCube, is a beginner-friendly racing game, somewhat similar to Mario Kart. The controls are simple in the various modes, which include Air Ride (standard mode up to six players), Top Ride (top-down racing with up to eight players), Road Trip (single-player challenge mode), and the online City Trial, which has you powering-up your vehicle before each race (up to 16 players). Play as Kirby, King Dedede, Meta-Knight, Waddle Dee, Knuckle Joe, and others in the Kirby universe. Customize your machines to race in 18 courses, half of which are returning from Kirby Air Ride.

Kirby Air Riders releases for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 20, 2025.
