The harbor was quiet, but not still. Three pirate ships loomed in the water, like vipers resting in the sun. I commandeered a small boat and crept toward the first ship—light-footed and unseen. Trinkets, coin, and clutter littered the deck, but there were no pirates, and no silk. It was a hollow prize, and I knew better than to linger.

The second ship proved more promising—and more dangerous. I silenced the archer above first, a precaution that proved wise. Below deck, the rest of the crew clustered—careless and loud—gathered near crates of black powder and fire. Their foolishness was my opportunity. One well-aimed kunai, one breath of flame, and they were gone. When the smoke cleared, the stolen silk gleamed amid the ash. I took everything of value, but it was the silk that mattered most.

The tailor was true to her word. With the silk returned, she crafted a kosode more fitting of shadow than sunlight—deep black, clean, dignified. Red may be tradition, but I am not tradition. I am a warning, a blade in the dark. If this garb impresses Master Sokyu, so be it. If not, I will earn his regard another way.
