🎬 Demons 2 (1986)

The Nightmare Returns (original title: Dèmoni 2) is the 1986 sequel to the cult classic Demons. Once again directed by Lamberto Bava and produced and co-written by Dario Argento, this follow-up retains the same hyper-stylized gore and heavy metal energy as the original, but cleverly shifts the setting from a claustrophobic cinema to a contemporary, high-rise apartment complex. This change in location allows the narrative to explore themes of modern isolation and the pervasive influence of media.
The Premise: The TV's Contagion
The film takes place a few years after the catastrophic events at the Metropol Cinema. The prior outbreak has been sensationalized and turned into a chilling piece of horror entertainment, which is now being shown on television.
The action centers on a luxurious, ultra-modern apartment building in Hamburg, West Germany, where many residents are settling in for the night. Among them is Sally (played by Nancy Brilli), a young woman celebrating her sixteenth birthday party. Elsewhere in the complex, a fitness instructor named Hank is having a tough night, and a young couple, George and Hannah (played by David Edwin Knight and Nancy Nichols), are anticipating the arrival of their baby.
The Second Outbreak: Technology as the Catalyst
The infection begins when Sally, alone in her apartment, watches the televised horror film—a fictionalized account of the Metropol massacre. As she watches a character on screen pick up an ancient, demonic mask, the sequence breaks the fourth wall: the monstrous creature on the television screen looks out at Sally, and then actually reaches out of the TV and attacks her.
The attack transforms Sally into a demon, echoing the rapid, gruesome metamorphosis from the first film, complete with acidic blood and razor-sharp claws. Crucially, the transformation is accelerated by the digital medium itself, implying that the horror is now a broadcast phenomenon.
Escalation in a High-Rise
With the initial outbreak starting during the birthday party, the contagion spreads through the dense apartment building via the ventilation shafts, hallways, and elevators. The luxury high-rise quickly becomes a multi-story deathtrap, isolating the survivors on different floors. The film heightens the terror by using the confined spaces of apartments and stairwells for intense, close-quarters combat.
A key element of Demons 2 is the transformation of a small child into a terrifying pint-sized demon, adding an element of corrupted innocence to the monster roster. Meanwhile, George and Hannah, trapped in their apartment and preparing for childbirth, must use all their wits to protect themselves and their newborn from the escalating horror.
The sequel retains the hallmark over-the-top violence and elaborate creature effects synonymous with Argento and Bava, blending technological anxiety with classic supernatural horror. Demons 2 successfully updates the formula for the late 80s, establishing a new type of horror where the pervasive nature of media becomes the primary vector for a demonic plague, securing its place as a revered entry in the Italian horror pantheon.
