I just watched AndyPants Gaming's video “Stop Noticing the War on Men” and had a lot of thoughts. He argues that the game-industry is shifting: games that used to celebrate masculine camaraderie, heroism and toughness are now increasingly framed around moral lessons, women in dominant roles, men becoming secondary. In this reaction I’ll talk about why I support his warning, what parts of the industry I believe are marginalizing men, and how we can push for games that honour all players—men included—without demonising progress.

What AndyPants Gaming claims: the shift away from “manly games” toward “girl bosses, moral didacticness and men as villains or bystanders”.

Why I’m supportive of Andy’s critique: Because men haven’t been off the table—they deserve games they can see themselves in, with agency, heroism and respect.

Why I’m critical of the industry behaviour: Some developers seem to treat games like lecture platforms, not adventures. When men are constantly side-lined, alienation grows.

Why I support the core message

When games exclude or down-prioritise male players’ experiences: less heroism, less agency, more moralising—it’s fair to say male gamers feel left out. A balanced industry should offer games for everyone, including men who want classic themes of heroism, brotherhood, war, conquest, challenge. AndyPants Gaming’s willingness to call this out brings attention to a voice that’s often ignored in the “diversity pushes”.

Where the industry is behaving problematically

Some developers appear to shift from “create fun & challenge” to “create messages & sanitized morality”. That’s fine if transparent—but if male players feel lectured rather than engaged, there’s a disconnect. Games marketed as “progressive” but lacking depth in gameplay or male appeal risk alienating a large segment of players. Male protagonists being replaced or diminished because of identity politics instead of design logic? That’s questionable.

The bigger risk: when men feel the industry no longer wants them, they leave, fragmentation occurs, and we lose part of the gamer base.

I believe this shift in game culture is real, and I agree with AndyPants Gaming that men’s experiences in gaming deserve attention. But it’s not enough to complain—it’s about solutions: games that retain masculinity, challenge, humour, adventure. Let’s encourage the industry to listen to all players. Men still matter. Heroes still matter. Adventure still matters.
