Known for his rich use of color, elaborate choreography, and breathtaking scale in previous works like Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower, Yimou brings a distinct, almost operatic aesthetic to this blockbuster.
​Unlike many Western fantasy films that favor muted, gritty tones, The Great Wall is awash in vibrant colors. This is most evident in the color-coded armor of The Nameless Order—blue, red, black, yellow, and brown—creating a mesmerizing visual tapestry against the somber gray stone of the Wall and the green-black hordes of the Tao Tei.

​To realize the scale of the Tao Tei attacks and the expansive fortress of the Great Wall, the film relied heavily on computer-generated imagery (CGI). However, Yimou’s approach aimed to integrate these digital elements seamlessly with the practical sets and costuming:
​The Scale of Battle: The CGI is essential in conveying the sheer impossibility of the situation—hundreds of thousands of Tao Tei swarming the Wall. The wide shots of the coordinated human defenses utilizing complex machinery, such as massive crane-operated spears and catapults, are a feast for the eyes.
​The Creature Design: The Tao Tei themselves are complex CGI creations. Their design, while fantastical, is rendered with enough detail to make them feel heavy and physically imposing, crucial for the audience to perceive them as a genuine threat.
