Kelly Clayton was a bright and attractive woman who excelled in school and had the potential for a modeling career. After high school, she attended a teacher training university but dropped out, choosing instead to travel and live freely. This decision led her to meet Tom Clayton, a semi-professional hockey player. They married, had two children, and settled in a small town where Tom franchised a business.

On the night of September 28, 2015, Tom returned home from a poker game to find Kelly brutally beaten and dead. Despite his attempts to revive her, she had been deceased for some time. The house showed signs of a violent struggle, but no forced entry or theft. Suspicion quickly fell on Tom, particularly after his daughter mentioned the attacker looked like her father.

Further investigation revealed that Tom had hired Michael Beard, a former employee, to kill Kelly and set the house on fire for insurance money. Michael initially claimed he was only hired for arson, but evidence, including a hammer with Kelly's blood, contradicted his story. Tom's phone records and suspicious behavior during the poker game also implicated him.

Ultimately, both Tom and Michael were convicted of murder and received life sentences, while their accomplice, Mark Blandford, received a lesser sentence for manslaughter. Kelly and Tom's children were placed in the custody of Kelly's sister.
