Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick indicted

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly stealing $5 million in FEMA overpayments to her family’s health care company and funneling part of it into her congressional campaign.

If convicted, she faces up to 53 years in prison, according to the Justice Department.

The indictment alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother received the overpayment in 2021 under a COVID vaccination staffing contract and laundered the money.

She has previously denied wrongdoing in ongoing House ethics investigations related to her campaign funding, Axios has reported.

Cherfilus-McCormick is also facing a 2026 primary challenge from teacher Elijah Manley, who has raised more campaign funds than her in recent months while campaigning on corruption allegations.
