Karen Read Sues, Alleging A Cover Up In John O’Keefe’s Death, Naming Alberts, McCabes, And Higgins.

Karen Read, recently acquitted of murdering her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, has filed a sweeping civil lawsuit accusing several individuals and investigators of being responsible for his death and orchestrating a cover-up. Although she was cleared of all charges related to O’Keefe’s 2022 death, she was convicted only of drunken driving.

Read’s lawsuit claims O’Keefe was killed inside Brian and Nicole Albert’s Canton home during a late-night party and that several people staged the scene to look like he died outside in the snow. The suit repeats allegations raised in her criminal trials, including a disputed Google search about how long it takes to die in the cold and assertions that O’Keefe’s injuries were consistent with a fight, not a fall or vehicle strike. It also alleges that the Alberts’ German shepherd caused bite-like wounds on O’Keefe’s arm.

Read argues investigators ignored clear evidence because of personal ties between former state trooper Michael Proctor and the Alberts. Proctor, fired after his texts were exposed during the criminal case, is accused of secretly communicating with the family and failing to investigate witness Brian Higgins, who Read says was seen moving a large bag between vehicles at the Canton Police Department the night of the incident.

Others named in the suit—including Brian and Nicole Albert, Jennifer and Matthew McCabe, and Higgins—deny wrongdoing. Five witnesses have signaled they plan to sue Read and blogger Aidan Kearney for defamation, calling her claims a fabricated conspiracy.

Read says the prosecution and the actions of those she is suing “forever changed” her life, arguing that O’Keefe’s true killer still walks free. Her attorney, Alan Jackson, said the lawsuit lays out a detailed account of misconduct and that Read is now seeking long-overdue accountability.
