England's "darkest times" in 1135 began with the death of King Henry I on December 1, which triggered a severe succession crisis that led to a brutal, nearly two-decade-long civil war known as The Anarchy.
The Crisis of 1135
King Henry I died without a legitimate male heir, as his only son, William Adelin, had tragically drowned years earlier in the White Ship disaster of 1120. Before his death, Henry had named his daughter, the intelligent and capable Empress Matilda, as his rightful successor, forcing his barons to swear an oath of fealty to her.
However, the idea of a woman ruling in her own right was widely contested by the Anglo-Norman nobility. Seizing the opportunity, Henry's nephew, Stephen of Blois, quickly invaded England and had himself crowned King on December 22, 1135. This act of defiance against Matilda's claim plunged the country into a devastating civil war.
