Culturally significant film musical from 1980 with Hazel O'Connor - a time when films made by young people for young people depicted the era of Thatcher's Britain where the working class, minorities and young people had little to no outlet to survive let alone express themselves. The Establishment then as now was set in their ways, trade unionists were blacklisted for expressing poor working conditions, poor young women were often rejected and forced into destitution or prostitution if they got pregnant, sometimes by their own families. Ethnic minorities had to work harder to get jobs. The social frustration came out usually in the form of music particularly punk rock, metal or reggae. . The older generation often complained how easy it was for 'Thatcher's generation' given how the elders suffered during the war years with food rationing, no television, low pay or not enough soap!. Some of those social outcasts became today's philosophers.
We did take things for granted but it still wasn't easy. Today, they have instant gratification, social media, films, music, WhatsApp, Chat GPT, 24 hour gyms, Deliveroo and the whole nine yards, but they'll never be able to feel or express the comparison of having to struggle and just having.

Some other notable British films of this era include Quadraphenia, McVicar, Scum, Babylon, The Great Rock n Roll Swindle and The Wall (Pink Floyd)

Hazel O'Connor, British singer-songwriter and actress. She became famous in the early 1980s with hit singles "Eighth Day", "D-Days" and "Will You?"
