Restin’ by the stone wall
Red and rusty vines
Around the posts
Footsteps in the leaves like passing ghosts
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees
No more leaves on trees

Walkin’ by the fence line
I wandered wasted, weary
Way off track
Wond’rin’ if you’d let me come on back
Wishin’ as the autumn season sets
No sorrow—no regrets

May sent me to wanderin'
August made me roam
October was a ramble

Standing’ by the bare limbs
The shadows in the avenue are long
The sparrow sings a winter welcome song
