George Lucas from 1999 by Academy of Achievement (link below) and a 2015 discussion at Sundance details how he used merchandise to ensure the creation of successive films in the Star Wars franchise and the independence of his filmmaking. Kenner toys were a big part in the early success of merchandise for Lucasfilm...but it started with t-shirts and posters.
