The story centers on Evelyn Warren (Linda Darnell), a naive schoolteacher who is named "Teacher of the Year" by Time Magazine. Seeking a change of pace, she travels to Las Vegas and loses a significant amount of money gambling at a casino managed by Matt Braddock (Stephen McNally).
Unable to pay her $7,000 debt, Evelyn agrees to an unusual arrangement proposed by Braddock: she will become a private teacher for his young, emotionally troubled daughter, Diana (Gigi Perreau), to pay off her IOU.
