Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J. (1891–1927)
Feast Day: November 23
Patron of: Persecuted Christians, confessors of the faith, martyrs, and those in need of courage.
Short Biography
Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez was born on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Mexico. From a young age, he was known for his humor, kindness, and deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1911, but due to anti-Catholic persecution in Mexico under President Plutarco Calles, Miguel and his fellow Jesuits were forced to flee the country.
Fr. Pro continued his formation in the United States, Spain, and Belgium, where he was ordained a priest in 1925. Despite severe government persecution of the Church, he returned to Mexico to minister secretly to Catholics who were forbidden to worship publicly.
His Ministry During the Persecution
Celebrated the sacraments in secret, often disguising himself as a mechanic, beggar, or businessman.
Brought the Eucharist to the sick and dying.
Comforted the poor and encouraged persecuted Catholics to remain faithful.
Became a powerful symbol of hope during the Cristero War.
Martyrdom
On November 23, 1927, Fr. Pro was falsely accused of involvement in an assassination attempt he had nothing to do with. Without trial, he was condemned to death by firing squad.
At the moment of his execution:
He forgave his executioners.
He stretched out his arms in the form of a cross.
He proclaimed loudly:
“¡Viva Cristo Rey!” — “Long live Christ the King!”
Photographs of his martyrdom, intended to intimidate Catholics, instead inspired even greater faith.
