To understand Robin Hood, one must understand the times in which he was created--or so some say actually lived.
The manor lord, in the days of feudalism, was granted his power through the king, and all others derived their power or station through the manor lord and perhaps the church.
In order to survive and provide for your family, the peasants had to be granted land in which to farm. However, much of what they made found its way into the hands of the nobility, through taxes, and the church, through tithing.
So, a hard scrabble life, was made that much harder. A man like Robin Hood was needed to give hope to the serfdom.
