Born in the middle of the 1800s in the United States, namely Wilmington, Delaware, Howard Pyle seems an unlikely source for the popularity of Robin Hood in modern culture.
However, Pyle, an extremely talented artist whose work was used to illustrate books of his day, fell in love with the tales of the great archer and hero to the downtrodden.
Using his extraordinary abilities, the artist compiled the known exploits of Robin Hood in The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. Meant to be a children's book, it was an instant success, and laid the foundation for what we know of the hero today.
