South Euclid, OH - The South Euclid Police Department is revealing new details about an incident last week in which an unruly customer at a local KFC crashed his moped while trying to run from officers.
Police said the confused and disorderly customer ended up in the hospital and now faces six charges stemming from the Nov. 14 encounter.
“Approximately 4:50 p.m., our officers were dispatched to the area of KFC for an irate customer,” public information officer Joe Di Lillo Jr. said. “A customer was acting in a disorderly manner towards the staff.”
Employees told police the man tried to order food from Rally’s, the restaurant located across the street.
“The male became belligerent with the staff and threatened to smack them,” Di Lillo Jr. said.
Body and dash camera video shows that when officers arrived, the 34-year-old Columbus resident took off on a blue moped. Police ordered him to stop, but he refused and made an obscene gesture toward officers.
“The individual turned his body towards the officer and extended his middle finger in his direction,” Di Lillo Jr. said. “When he turned his eyes back to the road in front of him, at that point, the male lost control of the moped or scooter and slid out from under him.”
While making that gesture, the driver lost control, crashed into a tree, and knocked himself unconscious, according to police.
Officers said the man did not have a valid license to operate the moped and was under the influence at the time.
South Euclid police said they do receive their share of calls involving unruly customers at restaurants, but few end in a chase and crash. Di Lillo Jr. said the entire situation was preventable.
“Don’t operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol,” he said. “There are plenty of services that will bring food to you, so you do not have to get behind the wheel of a car, or in this case, a moped, to go get food.”
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He faces six charges, including felony failure to comply with police, disorderly conduct and OVI.
