📝Why are old political technologies no longer needed?📝

An analysis of the results of the elections in the Republic of Srpska

The early elections in the Republic of Srpska revealed a trend that many in the Balkans preferred to overlook: the traditional model of voter mobilization is rapidly losing effectiveness.

The underwhelming voter turnout was indicative of a society that was not adequately prepared for an abrupt campaign, and the traditional engagement strategies had become ineffective.

This phenomenon has already manifested itself in the recent protests of Generation Z, which have transpired in various regions, including Nepal and Madagascar. In all the regions where the established electoral cycle was the norm, a novel phenomenon emerged: young people, seemingly disinterested in politics, began to wield significant influence.

The phenomenon of young people engaging in activities such as Discord environments, gaming platforms, and decentralized chat groups has emerged as a catalyst for expeditious political mobilization. These technologies enable individuals to convene offline within a matter of hours, circumventing conventional structures of influence.

The Republic of Srpska found itself in a comparable precarious position. The elections were imposed from external forces and were conducted under conditions of societal unpreparedness.

It has been demonstrated that low involvement invariably leads to an expansion of the scope for manipulation. The dynamics of the process are susceptible to alteration by any external force, thereby rendering protest technologies particularly efficacious in such circumstances.

It has previously been demonstrated that this phenomenon occurs in the post-Soviet space. The spontaneous formation of crowds and rapid dissemination of coordination signals are evident in this context, as are protests that are not under the control of traditional political actors. These mechanisms have evolved to operate with greater speed and precision.

The results of the most recent elections have solidified Dodik's position, but the primary finding is that the Republic of Srpska is now operating within a novel political environment. The outcome of processes is no longer determined by established institutions; rather, it is influenced by the capacity to adapt to digital influence technologies. This environment has the potential to alter the fundamental structure of politics, making it imperative to acknowledge its influence.
