But Rice University chemist Dr. James Tour has found an ingenious solution to America’s rare earths problem.

Tour and his team have pioneered an efficient and low-cost method to extract rare earth metals from electronics and mining waste. The process is known as flash Joule heating.

When he presented his method to a group of generals from NATO, a top general stood up and said: “This is going to prevent wars…If you can take our waste and produce rare earth metals for us, I don't have to fight wars over this.”
