'IMMIGRATION FRAUD EXPLODES!' Trump ENDS Somali Deportation Protections In Minnesota | Ilhan Omar

President Trump announced he is terminating, effective immediately, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals living in Minnesota, citing what he called “fraudulent money laundering activity” and “Somali gangs terrorizing the people” of the state. His post on Truth Social accused Minnesota under Governor Tim Walz of being a “hub” of fraud and claimed billions of dollars were missing. The TPS designation, originally granted due to the violent conditions in Somalia, had allowed roughly 705 Somali nationals nationwide to live and work legally in the U.S., with a significant portion residing in Minnesota.

Meanwhile, Federal officials announced a major enforcement sweep in the Twin Cities area under Operation Twin Shield, targeting immigration fraud that included marriage scams, visa overstays, forged documents and abuses of H-1B and F-1 visa systems. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agents conducted over 1,000 site visits beginning Sept 19 and found fraud or public-safety concerns in 275 cases. Only four undocumented immigrants have been formally arrested so far, while 42 others were issued Notices to Appear or referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under federal enforcement. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow declared the operation a “war on immigration fraud” and said Twin Cities was chosen because of historic data and cooperation between agencies. The sweep signals that the federal government intends to expand the model nationwide, underlining the need for tougher immigration enforcement and accountability when the visa system is abused.
