The walls of Amagasaki Castle brooded under a sky the color of old iron. We stood at the edge of the assault, the men below me breathing like drums of war. If the snipers remained, they would comb our ranks with death before we could set foot inside the keep. Wada Koretake must die, but first the long-range mouths of the enemy had to be closed. I moved like smoke—slow, patient, correct—feeling each step as if it were a breath drawn straight into my bones.

They were good. Far better than I expected. Bullets found my skin more than once; small things, grazes that stung but did not stop me. Perhaps luck, perhaps the gods, perhaps a misjudgment of my posture. The pain was honest and hot, a reminder that this night would not give itself willingly. I blurred along the eaves and rafters, each sniper a careful study in breath and habit. One by one I folded them into the shadow—silent hands, held mouths, eyes closing to the lantern glow.

It took every lesson I have been given—patience, timing, and the hunger to see justice done. When the final sniper fell, something in the air shifted. The constant hiss of distant bullets stopped. For a moment I allowed myself to taste exhausted triumph. My body ached; I was bloodied, not broken. The path forward was opened. Wada Koretake would feel the weight of this night soon enough.

I will find him. I will stand above him and tell him with my face the debt he owes. His last breath will be measured beneath my gaze. Every life he has taken, every field he has bled dry, I will count against him—and when he breathes his last, let him know who took it. Let him know the shape of vengeance.
