The film is a drama and film noir based on the 1938 novella by Kressmann Taylor. It tells the story of two German-American art dealers, Martin Schulz (Paul Lukas) and Max Eisenstein (Morris Carnovsky), whose friendship dissolves with the rise of Nazism in Germany before World War II. Martin returns to Germany and becomes involved with the Nazi party, leading to a tragic end for Max's daughter, Griselle (K.T. Stevens), who travels to Europe.
