Waterbury detective justified in returning fire after being shot by carjacking suspect

Waterbury, CT - A Waterbury police officer was found justified in returning fire after being shot in the leg by a carjacking investigation suspect in February, the Connecticut Office of the Inspector General determined in a report released Wednesday.

Waterbury police were on scene of Clairmont Avenue, Feb. 13, after reports of multiple attempted carjackings involving the brandishing of firearms. Police arrived in the area around 9:35 p.m., for a report of the suspects there.

When Det. Raymond Sackett saw one of the suspects, later identified as then 20-year-old Arian Perez-Feliciano- he pursued. Rounding the corner of one of the residences, the report said he was met with multiple rounds being of gunshots.

One of the bullets struck him in the thigh. Sackett returned fire, shooting multiple rounds at the fleeing Perez-Feliciano.

“Having sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, Detective Sackett’s return of fire was undeniably an appropriate use of self-defense,” the report states. “Accordingly, I find that his use of deadly force was objectively reasonable and therefore legally justified under Connecticut law.”

The suspect was not wounded by the officer returning fire and was apprehended on scene.

Two other suspects- 19-year-old Alberto Rodriguez and 18-year-old Sydney Reid were also arrested.

Later in court, prosecutors said the trio terrorized the city of Waterbury and alleged Perez-Feliciano was lying in wait for Det. Ronald Sackett, with a fancy scope on his gun and fired seven shots.

Raymond was rushed to the hospital and recovered from the injury.
