Hey friends — it’s Leaflit! Today I'm reacting to a video from Akkad Daily about Elon Musk’s new “About This Account” feature on X, where you can now see the country or region where an account is based. As it turns out, a lot of accounts that pose as “real” Americans — on both the right and the left — are actually running from totally different countries.

Here’s why this is a big deal, and why I’m so critical:

Deception on both sides: This isn’t just MAGA corners — accounts from people who claim to be patriotic Americans have been revealed as actually being in places like India, Nigeria, Eastern Europe, etc.

Political influence, not just opinions: These accounts aren't just posting memes — many are pushing political narratives as though they are authentic, domestic voices. That’s not just online trolling — it can be disinformation or coordinated influence.

Hypocrisy & manipulation: People pretending to be “real Americans” to gain trust, but they're essentially hiding behind a false identity. That’s shady, and it's dishonest to the very people they’re influencing.

Why Elon’s move matters: According to X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, this feature is supposed to help “secure the integrity of the global town square.”

But the feature isn't perfect: Some users are raising real concerns — data might be wrong for old accounts, or for those who VPN. And yes, there are privacy trade-offs.

Double standard is real: Whether you support conservative or liberal ideas, pretending to be someone you are not — especially about your nationality — undermines trust. It’s not just “free speech”; it’s misrepresentation.

My take:

I condemn both right-wing and left-wing accounts that mislead people about where they are — especially when they’re shaping political opinion.

Real political discourse needs real voices. Americans deserve to know who they are actually listening to.

At the same time, this isn’t about silencing people — it’s about calling out deception and demanding authenticity.

If you care about online integrity, real political debate, and protecting what it means to be an American voice — please like, subscribe, and hit the bell**. And let me know in the comments: Did you expect this many “American” accounts to be based elsewhere? What should X do next to protect its users?
