The weaponization of immigration, deportation, and mass migration is not new—but the escalating push for plunder, aided by high-tech surveillance tools, is helping it reach a fever pitch.

Author, photographer, war correspondent, and former Green Beret Michael Yon joins me this week to reflect on these trends. Yon has spent the past 20 years providing “unfiltered recon from the frontlines of the world’s most complex and chaotic global conflicts”—visiting over 100 countries in the process—so he knows whereof he speaks.

Yon connects the dots between weaponized migration, supply chains, and trade routes around the world, discussing regions as disparate as the Darién Gap (the region connecting southern Panama and northern Colombia that is a major migrant thoroughfare) and the port of Rotterdam (a critical endpoint of China’s Belt & Road Initiative). His observations about Rotterdam and the ambitious project to “merge 4 countries into 1 European city capital” in the form of the Tri-State City are of interest to me in light of my residence in the Netherlands. We also discuss the growing tensions between Japan, China, and Taiwan and the currency wars underway with stablecoins and programmable money.

Yon said in a recent interview that his senior officers in the military taught him something important: “[W]hat they would often say, ‘It’s all about conditions—set conditions for success or you’re setting conditions for failure.’” In light of the turbulent present-day conditions, we discuss actions we can take. Yon recommends building resilience in every way we can.
