Assassin’s Creed Shadows - Heads Will Roll - Part 2 - Killing the Wade Koretake

I moved through Amagasaki Castle like a memory no one could quite place—quiet, patient, and always watching. Guards fell to my shadow in corners and along stairwells; each life taken was another small calculus toward the debt I meant to collect. The corridors smelled of oil and old fear. I listened for routines, for the small tells of men who believed their station would shield them. Patience and information carried me deeper until, at last, the map of this place revealed where he hid.

He spoke alone, muttering like a man who already counted himself safe. Wade Koretake—his voice cracked with arrogance and worry—bragged to empty air about the rebels and how he had bled them thin. I watched from above, perched where moonlight and shadow met. When he peered into the courtyard I dropped like a thought he could not comprehend. I struck so he would not die at once; I wanted his eyes to see me, to know who had come for him. He tasted the end and spat defiance. I held him and asked what I needed—where the box was, why my father was left to die. He gave me nothing but the same arrogance that had left so many fields empty.

He would not break. So I finished what I had begun. Even after his last breath the ache inside me remained—wilder now, not soothed. In the chaos I found Mitsumune about to end a guard’s life. I saw in his hands the same hunger I carried; I understood why he moved as he did. Yaya did not agree—she called our path vengeance, not peace—and her words landed like a stone in my chest. Kyonyo handed me the statue of Shinran and said duty required its protection. I accepted it with a hand that would not stop trembling.

Three Onryo are dead now. Eight remain—eight faces that look like the hollow shape of my father’s last day. I tell myself every killing is for others, that each blade is a line drawn toward justice. But the blood trails behind me are long and the question gnaws: will the cost of this road ever be worth the peace we seek? For now I keep walking, sword at my side, and the list of names in my head. I am not finished.
