DEMONS & Unclean Spirits

Greetings Israelites, in today’s episode we cover Ephesians to James, and the Two Brains.

In part 10, we saw in John 7–8 and 10, “devil” language is used as a smear, not theology. The crowd tells Jesus, “Thou hast a devil” (7:20; 8:48, 52; 10:20), meaning, “You’re crazy, deceived, dangerous.” They weaponize the term to dodge His accusation that they break Torah and seek His death, while claiming Abraham and God as their Father. Jesus flips the charge: their lies, hatred, and murder-lust show they are doing the works of “the devil” (8:44)—not a spooky spirit, but the adversarial pattern of slander, falsehood, and bloodguilt. His promise of never seeing death, and His “Before Abraham was, I AM,” expose the real issue: covenant allegiance and truth vs. deception, not paranormal possession.
Acts then shows the same vocabulary applied to systems of bondage and idolatry, not independent spirit-beings. In Jerusalem and Samaria, people “vexed with unclean spirits” (Acts 5:16; 8:7) are healed alongside the sick—Luke pairs “unclean spirits” with diseases as conditions of oppression, false religion, and social exclusion being lifted. In Philippi, the “spirit of Python” (Acts 16:16–18) is straight out of Greek cult language: a divination racket tied to Apollo. Paul’s command in Jesus’ name publicly breaks a pagan money-making scheme, not validates Greek gods. At Athens, the crowd thinks he’s preaching “strange demons/gods” (17:18), but Paul immediately insists idols are “nothing” and that there is one true God. In Ephesus, “evil spirits” (Acts 19:12–16) are tied to sorcery, magic, and a corrupt priesthood (Sceva’s sons)—the whole episode ends with occult books burned and the word of God prevailing, not with a demonology lecture. Finally, Paul in 1 Corinthians 10 says Gentiles “sacrifice to devils (daimonia), and not to God” (10:20), directly echoing Deut. 32:17: demons = idols/false gods, not a race of fallen spirits. His warning is about fellowship with pagan systems, not monsters in the rafters. Put together, John, Acts, and Corinthians all show “devils/demons/unclean spirits” as the language of slander, idolatry, and oppressive religious-political systems—conditions and allegiances Christ exposes and overthrows, rather than literal entities lurking in the shadows.
