Two West Virginia National Guard members were shot in a targeted, ambush-style attack near Farragut Square in downtown Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, just blocks from the White House. The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. EST, one day before Thanksgiving, during a routine presence patrol as part of the "D.C. Safe and Beautiful Mission" initiated under President Donald Trump’s deployment order to address crime in the capital.

U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, of Webster Springs, West Virginia, died from her injuries on Thursday, November 27. She was assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade, and had only begun her service in June 2023. President Trump confirmed her death during a Thanksgiving Day call with U.S. troops, calling her a “highly respected, young, magnificent person.” Her father, Gary Beckstrom, confirmed her “mortal wound” and said she would not recover, paying tribute on social media: “My baby girl has passed to glory.”Beckstrom had a keen interest in criminal justice and aspired to become an FBI agent.

The second victim, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, remains in critical condition, fighting for his life. Wolfe, who joined the National Guard in 2019 and served with the 167th Airlift Wing, was also shot at close range in the head. His father, Jason Wolfe, has asked the public to “just pray for my son.” Both soldiers were shot in the head, according to U.S. officials briefed on the investigation.

The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an Afghan national who previously worked with U.S. forces during the war in Afghanistan, was apprehended at the scene after being shot and is currently hospitalized. He now faces first-degree murder charges for Beckstrom’s death, with additional charges expected. Authorities say he opened fire “without provocation” in an ambush-style attack. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the investigation is being treated as a possible act of terrorism, with the FBI and DHS involved in the probe.
