Plot and Paul Douglas's Role
The film centers around Paul Douglas's character, traffic policeman Charlie Dunnigan, who is the first on the scene when Robert Cosick (Richard Basehart) is spotted on the 15th-floor ledge of a Manhattan hotel. Over the course of 14 hours, Dunnigan, who is not a trained negotiator, develops a compassionate rapport with the troubled young man and becomes the only person Robert trusts.
