The battle at Amagasaki Castle still burned behind my eyes—the smell of blood, the ache of vengeance. Yet my heart pulled me toward Yaya. I had walked through fire and ruin, and still, I needed her forgiveness. Perhaps even her presence to remind me that I had not yet become the thing I hunted. The shrine where she prayed was no longer peaceful. I arrived to find her surrounded by monks—zealots blinded by their own conviction. The air cracked with shouts and the clash of wood and steel. Together, we silenced them. When it was done, I turned to her, my words catching in my throat like ash.

“Forgive me,” I said. But she only looked at me with eyes that held both sadness and clarity. “I do not do revenge,” she answered. Her voice carried neither judgment nor anger—only truth. Still, she saw something in me worth saving. She agreed to help, if I could help her uncover why the monks had invaded her shrine. It was a thread of mercy, thin and fragile, but I held it tightly.

Our search led us to a name—Tetsuo. Once a boy Yaya had guided, now a man lost to darkness. Or perhaps, abandoned to it. After losing his parents, she became his light, but when her husband died, that light dimmed. She left to follow Kyonyo, and in her absence, Tetsuo’s grief twisted into something dangerous. The monks, his theft, his rage—all stemmed from that wound. He had taken a hairpin once belonging to Yaya’s husband, a token heavy with memory and pain.

To help her find peace, I must face Tetsuo. I must stop him, but not destroy him. In saving him, perhaps Yaya can forgive herself—and in that, maybe she can forgive me as well. They say stray dogs bite only because they have been hurt too deeply to be touched. I fear Tetsuo is not the only one lost to that truth.
