WHAT HAPPENED ON THE CROSS EW KENYON CH 1-8
Identification with Christ
It is one of the great principles of Christianity," says Pascal, "that everything which happened
to Jesus Christ should come to pass in the soul and in the body of each Christian." If by faith I
am one with my Redeemer, then that term, "Christ crucified," involves another, "I, crucified
with Christ." Hence, we by no means reach the true measure of our inheritance in the cross
when we regard the death of Christ as a formal transaction, by which One, nineteen hundred
years ago, paid a debt that belonged to us, and thus secured our release from its obligation,
we having no other connection with the event than that of recipients of its blessings. Paul
saw a richer heritage for the saints than this. For with that key, in Christ, which opens for the
believer all the wards of Christian doctrine and life, he lets us into "the fellowship of his
sufferings.'' The great thought which filled his mind was his oneness with his Lord -- a
oneness not only of the present and the future, but equally of the past. And so he utters
those grand but awful words, "I have been crucified with Christ," in which he carries himself
back to the cross, and conceives of himself as so identified with the Redeemer that he was
with Him in His passion and obedience unto death, sharing by a mysterious fellowship not
only the virtue but the endurance of the divine penalty. And what was true for him is true for
all who have come into that condition expressed by the words, "in Christ Jesus." That the
crucifixion took place centuries ago does not separate us from it at all. While as a historical
event we assign it to a specific time and place, as a moral event it belongs to all time, and is
just as near to us as it was to John or the Marys. A. J. Gordon
2 Corinthians 5 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if
one died for all, then were all dead: 2 Corinthians 5 18 And all things are of God, who hath
reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their
trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Confession:
Our Identification with Christ is twofold: First, we were identified with Christ in that we were
accredited with what He did and as our Substitute, it was as though we did it. Christ suffered
the penalty for our sin and when He was made alive in spirit, we were accredited with His
triumph over Satan and His Resurrection (Ephesians 2:5, Colossians 2:15). 2 Corinthians 5 21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the
righteousness of God in him.
Secondly, By Christ being made sin, He was identified with us by nature, in order to
eliminate that nature and give us that Victory over Sin, Satan and Spiritual Death Hebrews
2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself 1:17
likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power
of death, that is, the devil; Revelation 1 18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I
am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Ephesians 2: 5 Even
when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. He not
only partook of our flesh an blood nature as the sinless Son Of God He was able to be made
sin and through death destroy the hold of spiritual death that Satan held over mankind.
When He was made alive He destroyed Satan and His Lordship of sin and death, in effect
taking the keys of hell (judgment) and death from Him. Then when He was made alive we
were identified with Him, being made alive with Him.
We were Crucified with Christ
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth
in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved
me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
Confession: We were crucified with Christ and its no longer the old us that lives, but
Christ lives in us. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Heb
9:27), our crucifixion and death with Christ made us share in His judgment for us so now we
are free from it. Christ lives in us and we share in His resurrection and victory over Satan and
death. We live now by faith in the Son of God who gave Himself for us. Our crucifixion with
Christ has created a separation between us and the world. We are crucified to the world and
the world is crucified to us. The cross has provided a permanent barrier between us and the
world.
Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin
might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Confession: Knowing, is a deep
spiritual knowledge (epignosis). The Holy Spirit, by His grace is giving us a deep spiritual
comprehension that we were crucified with Christ in order that our bodies which were
controlled by our old sinful natures, that domination has been destroyed so that we are
dominated by the new nature the Divine nature, which is the nature of the New Creation in
Christ. Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of
commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so
making peace; Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in
righteousness and true holiness. Colossians 3 10 And have put on the new man, which is
renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
We Died with Christ
Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that
so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? We need a
deep spiritual comprehension that we died with Christ. In our identification with Christ we
participated in His death and so also in His resurrection. Since we are dead with Christ to sin,
sin no longer has dominion over us; we no longer need to live under its bondage. Our death
with Christ has freed us from sin, sickness poverty, the effects of spiritual death, the fall and
from poverty.
Confession: Baptism is a symbol of our participation with Christ in His burial and in His
resurrection our death with Christ buried our old nature and our association to Satan and the
world, once and for all. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we
shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: By Christ being the divine seed planted, He
bore much fruit in His resurrection. We were identified with Him in His death, so in effect
planted with Him identified with Him, and since we were planted with Him in HSs death, we
were planted with Him in what that death produced, death to sin, satan and the world, and
what His resurrection life produces. His Death for us produced ro us, Death to Sin, THis
resurrection produces in us that Heavenly life that frees us from sin, the world and effects and
produces holiness, faith and all the benefits of Godliness.
Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we
believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead
dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto
sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be
dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Confession: A dead man is free from sin, and sinning, free from any obligations to this
world and his associations to it. In the same way we are dead and free from sin and this world
in Christ. Our death with Christ’s suggests a resurrection with Him and a partaker of His
resurrection Life and all that produces in us. He died to sin, once and for all. We died with
Him, now He lives forever with the Heavenly Father, we live now with Him. We are to reckon,
or set to our account that we are dead with Him to sin, once and for all, and alive with Him,
once and for all in His resurrection life. Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by
baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Colossians 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world,
why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, Colossians 3:3 For ye are
dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Our death with Christ has freed us from the
rudimental spirits, the ruling spirits of this world, so that we are not ruled by the world’s
elementary teachings of externalism. We have passed beyond their reach with Christ. We
have died with Christ and our life is now hid with Christ in God.
We were Buried with Christ
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as
Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in
newness of life. Hebrews 2 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels
for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should
taste death for every man. Colossians 2 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are
risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Confession: Water Baptism symbolizes our baptism or Burial with Christ into the Death
realm. After satisfying the demands of justice against our sins and the nature reflected in our
old man or spiritual nature we with Christ were raised from the dead by the Father’s glory to
walk in newness of life. We were buried in our baptism with Christ and raised through the
operation of God that raised Christ from the dead. When we Confessed the Lordship of Jesus
and believed that God raised Him from the dead we were exerting our faith in that operation
from God and that salvation became ours vitally and we were born again (Romans 10:9,10).
We Were Made alive with Christ
1 Corinthians 15 36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
2 Corinthians 5 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be
made the righteousness of God in him. Hebrews 2 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little
lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by
the grace of God should taste death for every man. 120 Ephesians 2 1 And you hath he
quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Ephesians 2 5 Even when we were dead in
sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Colossians 2 13 And you,
being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with
him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Confession: Jesus used the analogy of the seed dying to explain His substitutionary
death and resurrection for us. He was made sin, tasting death for all men, that we might be
declared and made righteous through His sufferings and death. After Jesus was raised far
above all principality and power, we also were quickened, made alive, when we were dead in
trespasses and sins. We were quickened, made alive together with Him, having forgiven us of
all our sins.
We Conquered with Christ
Colossians 2 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them
openly, triumphing over them in it.
Hebrews 2 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also
himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the
power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all
their lifetime subject to bondage.
Confession: By being made alive, Christ was able to spoil, despoil, defeat all the
satanic and demonic power that opposed His resurrection and put them to an open display of
defeat. Through His death, He was able to destroy, defeat, dethrone Satan who was the Lord
of death. Jesus was made alive again in spirit and there was nothing to hold Him in the dark
regions any longer. That brought us deliverance from the fear and control that Satan had over
man, which he used to Lord over and dominate man through sin, sickness and all manner of
Satanic bondage. Satan has been eternally defeated and dethroned as far as we are
concerned. We share in Christ’s victory. Satan knows he is defeated, and when we use the
Name of Jesus, he must leave.
We were Raised with Christ
Colossians 3 1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above,
where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Ephesians 1 17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give
unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your
understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the 121 hope of his calling, and
what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding
greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own
right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and
dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to
come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to
the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
Confession: We were raised with Christ in our identification with Him so now we have
the ability to seek and enjoy the things which are above, the blessings of God’s throne and the
Heavenly life. The authority of Jesus resurrection and seating at God’s right hand are ours and
given to us in the use we have of Jesus’ Name. Paul prayed that believers would receive the
spirit of wisdom and deep revelation in the greatness of the power that is to us or in us who
believe. The same mighty power which He worked in Christ, raising Him far above all
principality, power and demonic authority, putting all this under His feet. Our identification
with Christ in this is complete, for as His body, everything that is under His feet is under our
feet. Satan is a defeated foe, for He was defeated by Jesus and we share in that victory.
EW Kenyon states,”This is the climax of the Redemptive work of Christ. Eph. 1:19-23.
We have seen Jesus after the Resurrection exalted to the highest seat in the universe, with all
dominion, all authority, all power beneath His feet. We know in Col. 1:18, we are His feet, His
body. All that is beneath His feet is beneath ours. His victory is our victory. There is no reason
for Christ's coming and entering the tremendous contest for our Redemption unless it was for
us. He did not do it for Himself. What He did for us is ours.
We were Seated with Christ
Colossians 3 1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above,
where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Ephesians 2 6 And hath raised us up together,
and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Confession: Christ is now seated at God’s right hand, and we were raised up together
and made to sit together with Christ in Heavenly places. The rich treasures and all spiritual
blessings are ours to appropriate and enjoy. The spiritual blessings convert themselves by
faith into natural blessings of healing and prosperity as well. This is the climax of the
Redemptive work of Christ. Eph. 1:19-23 Hebrews 4 122 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto
the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Identification with Christ
This is probably the Deepest and most powerful thing that can be known about
Redemption and the most far reaching and enduring truth for your spiritual growth and Mind
Renewal.
An Introduction to Our Identification With Christ
You will notice in the study 12 Things We Are and Have In Christ, that there is a
section "With Christ." These scriptures show us our Identification With Jesus in His Crucifixion
and in His Resurrection. You and I were not there physically, but the cross drew us and really
all mankind on the cross mystically through Jesus our representative. There are three points
to remember about our Identification with Christ.
First Jesus was our representative (substitute) acting for us so we were accredited
with what He did on the cross. 2 Corinthians 5 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us;
because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 18 And all things are of
God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of
reconciliation; 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not
imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Secondly, The Apostle Paul says Jesus was made sin for us, so we could be made the
righteousness of God In Him, so in whatever sense Jesus was made to be sin, we were
Identified with that. Sin and spiritual death had to be eradicated on the cross and
righteousness and Eternal Life paid for for us on that Cross.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we
might be made the righteousness of God in him. Thirdly, by The New Birth, by receiving
Eternal Life into our spirits, that work of Substitution became vitally ours and we received the
manifestation of the Redemptive work of the Cross, we were made New Creatures.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things
are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Corinthians 5 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if
one died for all, then were all dead: 2 Corinthians 5 18 And all things are of God, who hath
reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
123 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their
trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Confession: In Our Identification with Christ we were identified with Christ in that we
were accredited with what He did and as our Substitute, it was as though we did it. Christ
suffered the penalty for our sin and when He was made alive in spirit, we were accredited
with His triumph over Satan and His Resurrection (Ephesians 2:5, Colossians 2:15).
2 Corinthians 5 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we
might be made the righteousness of God in him.
By Christ being made sin, He was identified with us by nature, in order to eliminate
that nature and give us that Victory over Sin, Satan and Spiritual Death.
Hebrews 2 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he
also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that
had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Revelation 1 18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for
evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Ephesians 2 5 Even when we were
dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Ephesians 2 18
For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. He not only partook of
our flesh an blood nature as the sinless Son Of God He was able to be made sin and through
death destroy the hold of spiritual death that Satan held over mankind. When He was made
alive He destroyed Satan and His Lordship of sin and death, in effect taking the keys of hell
(judgment) and death from Him. Then when He was made alive we were identified with Him,
being made alive with Him. 1. I was Crucified with Christ Galatians 2 20 I am crucified with
Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the
flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 6
14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the
world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. We were crucified with Christ and its no
longer the old us that lives, but Christ lives in us. And as it is appointed unto men once to die,
but after this the judgment (Heb 9:27), our crucifixion and death with Christ made us share in
His judgment for us so now we are free from it. Christ lives in us and we share in His
resurrection and victory over Satan and death. We live now by faith in the Son of God who
gave Himself for us. Our crucifixion with Christ has created a separation between us and the
world. 124 We are crucified to the world through Jesus and the world is crucified to us. The
cross has provided a permanent barrier, Fire Wall, between us and the world. Romans 6:6
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed,
that henceforth we should not serve sin. Knowing, is a deep spiritual knowledge (epignosis).
The Holy Spirit, by His grace is giving us a deep spiritual comprehension that we were
crucified with Christ in order that our bodies which were controlled by our old sinful natures,
that domination has been destroyed so that we are dominated by the new nature the Divine
nature, which is the nature of the New Creation in Christ. Ephesians 2 15 Having abolished in

himself of twain one new man, so making peace; Ephesians 4 24 And that ye put on the new
man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Colossians 3 10 And have
put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
2. Died with Christ Romans 6 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his

Baptism symbolizes our baptism or Burial with Christ into the Death realm. After satisfying
the demands of justice against our sins and the nature reflected in our old man or spiritual

make an example of, to show as an example. To expose one to disgrace. A word unknown to
Grk. Writing. Occurs on the Rosetta Stone, Line 30. A.J. Gordon also refers to the term,”In
