Fun Facts:
The film was inspired by the 1936 Soviet movie The Thirteen, which also depicted defenders at an isolated desert outpost.
J. Carrol Naish received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Giuseppe.
Rex Ingram’s character, Sgt. Major Tambul, added a rare early example of a strong African ally role in wartime Hollywood films.
Humphrey Bogart considered this one of his personal favorite roles.
The tank used in the film, a real M3 Lee, was modified by the studio to appear more battle-worn for realism.
