Hey everyone — it’s Leaflit here. Today I’m reacting to a deeply disturbing story: a 29-year-old Afghan national settled in the U.S. under the post-2021 evacuation program has been identified as the suspect in the shooting of two National Guard members near the White House in Washington, D.C.

This tragedy forced me to ask some hard questions — not just about one individual, but about a system that allowed him in and still seems to struggle vetting and integrating refugees from halfway across the world:

Why are people being resettled from places like Afghanistan and Somalia, thousands of miles away, often with radically different cultures, and expected to seamlessly fit into American society?

Many of them may not truly assimilate — and in some cases, tragedies like this show what can happen when integration fails.

If an immigrant refuses (or fails) to adapt to core American values, laws and norms, should they really be resettled here — especially through refugee or asylum programs?

What message does this shooting send to regular citizens who follow the law, pay taxes, and try to build safe communities? That their security can be threatened because of immigration policies.

I believe the U.S. should prioritize public safety and social cohesion — and that means being more careful who we let in, from where, and making sure there’s accountability if someone breaks the law.

In this video I walk through the facts of the case: where the suspect came from, what his background was, how he arrived in the U.S., and what is now being done. Then I explain my take: that in a time when our society is already fragile, resettling huge numbers of foreigners from distant, culturally alien regions — without strict vetting and strong assimilation expectations — is a risk many Americans are tired of being asked to take.
