Chapter Summary and Overview:

Revelation chapter 3 contains messages from Jesus to three churches—Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea—which serve as both a rebuke and an encouragement. The church in Sardis is told it is spiritually dead despite appearing alive and must repent and strengthen its faith. The church in Philadelphia is commended for its faithfulness and rewarded with an open door that no one can shut. The church in Laodicea is warned that it is lukewarm and spiritually poor, and is advised to buy spiritual riches from Jesus.

To the church in Sardis

Rebuke: Jesus says the church has a reputation for being alive but is spiritually dead.

Exhortation: Be watchful, strengthen the things that remain, and repent to hold fast to what they have received.

Promise: Those who overcome will be clothed in white and their name will not be blotted out of the book of life.

To the church in Philadelphia

Commendation: Jesus commends them for keeping His word and not denying His name.

Promise: Because they have persevered, He will keep them from the hour of testing and will make those from the synagogue of Satan fall at their feet.
To the church in Laodicea

Rebuke: Jesus calls them lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, and warns they will be spewed out of His mouth.

Exhortation: They are told to buy from Him "gold refined in the fire," "white clothes," and "eye salve" to become truly rich and see. He also stands at the door and knocks, inviting them into a personal relationship.
