Work for “the Work” - “A Mind To Work”
(Excitement in the Work of the Lord)
Text: Nehemiah 4:6

Objective: that the brethren have the excitement and best mindset to “work for the work” of the Lord

Intro:
Define – excitement/ed, work, mind
Background of context of Nehemiah and the work that they did in building the walls in “52 days”

Points to Consider

I. THE CONDITION BEFORE THE WORK (THE BROKEN WALLS)
Before anyone lifted a tool, the situation was discouraging:
The walls were ruined (Neh. 1:3)
The gates were burned
The people were in “great affliction and reproach”
It looked hopeless.

Application:
Many believers today also see “broken walls” in:
their spiritual life
their family
their church
their burden for souls
their joy in the Lord
But God specializes in rebuilding what has fallen.

The first step is not skill… but willingness.

II. THE CALL TO WORK (THE BURDEN OF NEHEMIAH)

Nehemiah did not begin with a blueprint—he began with a burden.
Nehemiah 1:4
“I sat down and wept… and prayed before the God of heaven.”
His tears turned into action.

Nehemiah presented the need to the people and said:
Nehemiah 2:17

“Come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem…”

And the people responded: Nehemiah 2:18 “Let us rise up and build.”

Application:
The work of God begins when someone cares deeply.
A church rises when a few rise up.
A ministry grows when the people catch the burden.
God works through willing vessels.

III. THE CHALLENGES AROUND THE WORK (ENEMIES AND OPPOSITION)

As soon as the work begins, the enemies appear:
Sanballat laughed them to scorn (4:1–2)
Tobiah mocked their efforts (4:3)
Others plotted to fight and discourage them (4:7–8)

Whenever God’s work moves forward, criticism increases.

Application:
Today, the devil uses:
discouragement
fear
mockery
distractions
spiritual laziness
division

But God’s answer is the same today as in Nehemiah’s time…

IV. THE SECRET OF THEIR PROGRESS (A MIND TO WORK)

Nehemiah 4:6 “So built we the wall… for the people had a mind to work.”

They didn’t have:
the latest equipment
the strongest armies
“the wealthiest resources”
But they had willing hearts.

A. A Mind to Work Means a Ready Heart

They were not pushed—they were eager.
The greatest ability in God’s work is availability.

B. A Mind to Work Means Unity

They worked together—every family, every group.
Division destroys; unity builds.

C. A Mind to Work Means Commitment
Despite threats, fatigue, and mockery—they kept laying stones.

D. A Mind to Work Means Joy in the Task

They were not forced to serve—they wanted to serve.

Application:
The work of God succeeds when God’s people stop needing to be pushed…
and start pushing themselves.

V. THE COMPLETION OF THE WORK (VICTORY THROUGH WILLINGNESS)

Nehemiah 6:15 - “So the wall was finished…”
In just 52 days, a wall broken for decades was rebuilt.

This was not human strength—this was God blessing willing hearts.

Principle to get here: God does great things through people who have a mind to work.

Application:
If families have a mind to work—marriages are rebuilt.
If churches have a mind to work—souls are saved.
If Christians have a mind to work—revival happens.
If young people have a mind to work—God raises future leaders.
If preachers have a mind to work—communities change.

VI. TODAY’S CALL: DO WE HAVE A MIND TO WORK?
Nehemiah’s story now becomes our challenge.
Do we…
have a mind to worship?
have a mind to pray?
have a mind to serve?
have a mind to reach souls?

have a mind to build the church?
have a mind to fight sin and rebuild holiness?
God does not need perfect people—He needs willing people.

Final challenge:
Do the Work!
Not grudgingly… but gladly.
Not half-hearted… but wholeheartedly.
Not passively… but passionately.

When God’s people have a mind to work, nothing can stop what God wants to build.

Message/conclusion:
Let us have the excitement and best mindset to “work for the work” of the Lord
