The modern redefinition of atheism as merely "lack of belief" doesn't withstand scrutiny. Professional philosophers—including atheist philosophers—reject this redefinition and maintain the traditional understanding: atheism is the positive belief that God does not exist. The "lack of belief" framing attempts to shift the burden of proof, but it creates a logical problem. People also "lack belief" in things that demonstrably exist. The reason atheists compare their position to disbelief in Santa Claus rather than disbelief in Antarctica reveals the truth—they hold a positive conviction that God doesn't exist, not simply an absence of belief.
