“Demas hath forsaken me”
(Drifting Away From The Faith)
Text: 2 Timothy 4:10; Hebrews 2:1

Objective: that the brethren not depart from the service of the Lord and His Faith
Intro:
Define – service, drift, forsake, worldly/ness, away, faith/church/service
Background of context Paul and his companions – mentions of Demas

Points to Consider
I. The Reality Of Drifting — it can happen to any believer
A. Drifting is subtle, silent, and slow
Just as a boat drifts when it’s not anchored, Christians can drift when not spiritually secured.
B. A biblical warning
Hebrews 2:1 - “…lest at any time we should let them slip.”
C. Even strong believers can drift
Revelation 2:4 “…thou hast left thy first love.”
The church did not lose their love — they left it.
D. Spiritual drift begins inwardly
Proverbs 14:14 “The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways…”
II. The Root Causes Of Drifting
A. Neglect of God’s Word
Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Without the Word, we slowly lose our direction.
B. Prayerlessness
1 Thessalonians 5:17 - “Pray without ceasing.”
When prayer stops, drifting begins.
C. Worldly influence and love for the world - The world pulls like a current.
2 Timothy 4:10
“For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world…”
D. Wrong relationships and false teachings
1 Timothy 4:1
“…some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits…”
E. A hardened or unbelieving heart
Hebrews 3:12 “Take heed… lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.”

III. The Results Of Drifting Away
A. Loss of spiritual desire -- The things once loved become a burden.
B. Compromising sin becomes easier
Galatians 5:7 “Ye did run well; who did hinder you…?”
C. Weakening influence and testimony
A drifting Christian becomes a stumbling block.
D. Greater vulnerability to deception
2 Timothy 2:17–18 - “…who concerning the truth have erred… and overthrow the faith of some.”
E. Possible tragic return to old sins
2 Peter 2:20–21 “…the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.”

IV. The Remedy For Drifting — How To Return And Stay Anchored
A. Remember and Re-do your first love
Revelation 2:4–5 “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent…”
B. Anchor yourself in the Word of God
Psalm 1:2–3 “…his delight is in the law of the LORD…”
God’s Word stabilizes the soul.
C. Draw near to God daily in prayer
James 4:8 “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
D. Stay faithful in assembling with believers
Hebrews 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…”
Fellowship helps keep us from drifting alone.
E. Reject worldly currents and influences
1 John 2:15 - “Love not the world…”
F. Constant self-examination
2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith…”

V. The Call To Action — Hold Fast!
A. Hold fast your faith
Hebrews 10:23 “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering…”
B. Fight the good fight
1 Timothy 6:12 - “Fight the good fight of faith…”
C. Look to Jesus, our anchor
Hebrews 6:19 - “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul…”
Finale:
Drifting never happens suddenly — it happens slowly.
Not with a loud crash, but with quiet neglect.
Not by rejection of God, but by small steps away.
But the good news is: you can return, be restored, and be anchored again.
Message/conclusion:
Let us not depart from the service of the Lord and His Faith, rather be more zealous and steadfast…
