Willie Nelson - Funny How Time Slips Away

Nelson wrote this in 1961 for Patsy Cline, one of only a few big names in Nashville at the time who understood him. Nelson was eventually rejected by the Nashville labels as too offbeat, too artsy-fartsy for mainstream country music.
Nelson said of his early experience in Nashville: “I enjoyed fooling around with phrasing, but it made my sound noncommercial for all those Nashville ears who were listening for the same old stuff and misunderstood anything original.”
Billy Walker (a star at the Grand Ole Opry at the time) actually snapped this song up and was the first to record it. Even though Nelson showed early promise with this song, and “Crazy”, recorded by Patsy Cline, he couldn’t get a Nashville recording contract that allowed him to do what he wanted with his music. He eventually returned to Texas, started over, and did it his own way.
The song became a live staple of Nelson’s and a classic standard, used by stars like, George Jones Elvis Presley, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Jones, Al Green & Tina Turner.

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Well, hello there
My, it's been a long, long time
How am I doing?
Oh, I guess that I'm doing fine
It's been so long now
But it seems now that it was only yesterday
Gee, ain't it funny
How time slips away?

[Verse 2]
How's your new love?
I hope that he's doing fine
I heard you told him
That you'd love him 'til the end of time
Now that's the same thing that you told me
Seems like just the other day
Gee, ain't it funny
How time slips away?

[Verse 3]
I gotta go now
I guess I'll see you around
Don't know when though
Never know when I'll be back in town
But remember what I tell you
In time, you're gonna pay
And it's surprising how time slips away
