The school kidnapping in Niger state’s remote Papiri community happened four days after 25 schoolchildren were seized in similar circumstances in neighboring Kebbi state’s Maga town, which is 170 kilometers (106 miles) away.

The United Nations has condemned the abduction of hundreds of students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Niger State, calling for their immediate and safe return.

In a statement on Friday, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric described the mass kidnapping as “heartbreaking,” stressing that schools must remain safe spaces for learning and development.

The latest attack comes just days after a similar incident in Kebbi State. According to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), 303 pupils and 12 teachers were taken by armed men who stormed the school in Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

No group has claimed responsibility for the abductions, and authorities have deployed tactical squads and local hunters in their efforts to rescue the hostages. Newsweek has reached out to the White House for comment by email Saturday morning.

The girls were abducted on Nov. 17, and police at the time had said 25 were taken, but a statement Tuesday quoted President Bola Tinubu as saying that all 24 of the students who had been abducted were rescued. No details were released about the rescue mission.
